Villanova University a private university located in Villanova, which is a community in the United States Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, stretching in both Lower Merion Township of Montgomery County and Radnor Township of Delaware County, being situated at the center of the Pennsylvania Main Line. Acording to the 2000 census, Villanova has more than 9000 people, living within its limits, and over 1900 households residing in the community.
Villanova University was founded by the Order of Saint Augustine, in 1842, tracing its roots to old Saint Augustine's Church, Philadelphia, which the Augustinian friars founded in 1796, and to its parish school, Saint Augustine's Academy, which was established in 1811. The university was named after Saint Thomas of Villanova and it is the oldest and largest Catholic university in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
For more than a decade, Villanova has been ranked Nr. 1 by U.S. News and World Report in the Best Universities-Masters category in the northern region, its School of Business being ranked by Business Week 11th in 2009, its School of Law being ranked as a Top Law School by the 2009 edition of U.S. News & World Report's "Best Graduate Schools," being placed 61st overall. Villanova’s Master’s program in Psychology has been also highly ranked, being placed among the top 10 Master’s-only departments (95th percentile) in the United States and Canada with regard to research productivity.
Villanova's athletic teams are known as the Villanova Wildcats, who compete in NCAA Division I, in various men's and women's sports, including in basketball, baseball, football, golf, soccer, swimming, diving and water polo. The women's basketball team is among NCAA's 14 teams with a 100 percent graduation rate for 2002-03, the Wildcats being nationally ranked for their men's basketball and football teams at 92%, the men's basketball team's graduation-success rate being placed 5th nationally among Division I schools.
